The Backwards Groups Workshop

Nobody wants to shop for friends.

So let's try something different for your next group launch.

60 minutes | Free on Zoom

Groups are getting weirder lately... have you felt it too?

It's not that people don't want community. They're actually desperate for it.

But we've left the hardest part to them: picking a room full of strangers and hoping it fits.

Then we wonder why they don't stay.

Maybe our groups are backwards.

Groups aren't another program bolted onto your church's connection culture. They're where it gets tested at some of the deepest levels.

In 60 minutes, we'll flip a few things on their head.

Fair warning: I originally started by fixing my on-ramp… but ended up rethinking the point of our groups altogether.

What we'll cover

  • Why hand-matching is the best way to place people (but seemingly impossible to scale)
  • How your launch language is filtering out the very people you're trying to reach
  • How to double or triple the top of the interest funnel
  • The bigger problem lurking behind the loneliness epidemic (the thing that might be ruining your groups)
  • How we got about half of every new group to show up for facilitator training (without begging)
  • How to aim higher than ever with your mission statement so your groups are focused on the right thing
  • A realistic path forward you can start building before January

Who it's for: Groups and connection pastors and directors, lead pastors, and anyone who owns how people find community at your church. More the merrier.

Your guides

Tommy Carreras. Former groups pastor, now helping churches build connection culture with Climbing the Assimilayas. The ideas in this workshop come from years of getting groups wrong, then finally trying something new.

Greg Curtis. Founder of Climbing the Assimilayas and the original assimilation guru. He's the Director of People Development and Content at Eastside Church in Anaheim.

Special Guest: Aziz Friedrich of Everus. Everus is intentional member matching. It reads who a newcomer actually is and recommends where they're most likely to take root, with a plain-English reason that both the person and the church can see. (Everus is a paid partner of Climbing the Assimilayas for this workshop and the related church pilot.)
